Understanding the notions of ability and disability Ability is the developed physical, mental, social potential or acquired skill enabling to do a task. In other words, ability pertains to possession of the qualities required to do something and consists of necessary skill, competence, or power to accomplish something. Ability can be seen as a combination of considerable skill proficiency and capability to do a task by a person. The World Health Organization defines a disability as "any restriction or lack (resulting from any impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being". According to the United Nations Standard Rules (UNSRs) on the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities, the term "disability" summarizes a great number of different functional limitations occurring in any population in any country, of the world. "People may be disabled by physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, medical conditions or mental illness. Such impairments, conditions or illnesses may be permanent or transitory in nature," inform UNSRs. However there is a need to strike a note of caution here that one should never compare people with a disability with normal people since it leads to labeling and stigma for being 'abnormal' and ignoring the fact that everyone has their own unique identity and abilities. The new term in vogue for the disabled is 'differently-abled person'. The pinoy haiku is a Japanese poetic art form in which a verse consists of a total of 6 to10 words written in three lines. There is one word in the first line; two in the second line; three in the third line and four in the fourth line. The beauty of this poetry is that there is no restriction on the syllables, stress and rhyming. A single thought is used to express a positive thought or a gem of wisdom. Here are some thoughts organized in pinoy haiku poetic form. Read, contemplate and live through their wisdom… Abilities are real wealth of humans §§§ Humans are judged by acquired abilities §§§ Able is the one who enables others §§§ Slogging is required to hone abilities §§§ Innate abilities require unfolding and development §§§ Abilities have no value unless applied §§§ Humans are judged by acquired abilities §§§ Able is the one who enables others §§§ Slogging is required to hone abilities §§§
